Understanding Substance Use Programs for Pregnant Mothers
Many expectant mothers who struggle with substance use often face fear of judgment and a lack of access to care. This uncertainty makes it challenging to know where to turn for help.
Substance use programs designed specifically for new and pregnant mothers aim to address these challenges by providing medical care, emotional support, and practical resources in a coordinated and compassionate way.
Pregnancy-Specific Programs Matter
Discussing the intersection of substance use and pregnancy feels taboo to many, including the mothers who find themselves in this situation. Pregnancy also brings about hormonal changes and new emotions that general substance use programs may not fully address. Expectant mothers require prenatal care alongside substance use treatment, and both must be carefully coordinated.
Specialized programs protect maternal health while supporting fetal development. These programs emphasize health outcomes and personal growth, which improves participation and long-term success.
What to Expect from a Pregnancy-Focused Substance Use Program
Programs like CASCADE aim to help mothers become drug-free, reclaim their lives, deliver healthy babies, and parent with confidence. CASCADE uses a gender-specific and family-centered approach that focuses on women supporting women. We ground our individualized care in a 12-step, trauma-informed philosophy.
The program typically lasts 9 to 12 months and is conducted on an outpatient schedule. Services include:
- Case management
- Long-term, intensive outpatient, and residential treatment
- Prenatal care
- Childcare and parenting classes
- Job skills education
- After care
Females who are 18 years or older, North Carolina residents, pregnant or parenting, and have alcohol and/or drug use are eligible for CASCADE. They may also be attempting to maintain or regain custody of a child. Pregnant women are given preference in admissions.
