Celebrating Value and Talent: Recognizing the Contributions of People with Disabilities

October 2, 2026

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM)—a time to recognize the value, talent, and contributions of people with disabilities in our workplaces and communities.

As our nation celebrates its 250th anniversary in 2026, we have an opportunity to reflect on the many people, experiences, talents, and contributions that have shaped our communities. “Celebrating Value and Talent” is a powerful reminder that every person has something meaningful to contribute.

At Community Alternatives, Inc. (CAI), we believe this includes people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD).

See Ability. Celebrate Talent. Create Opportunity.

For people with disabilities, employment can be much more than a paycheck. It can provide purpose, independence, confidence, connection, and the opportunity to contribute to the community.

Every individual brings unique strengths, interests, skills, and perspectives. When we look beyond disability and recognize those abilities, we create opportunities for people to pursue meaningful work and achieve their personal goals.

That is what Celebrating Value and Talent means to us.

It means recognizing what people bring—not focusing on what they may need help with.

Creating Opportunities Where Talent Can Thrive

Inclusive employment begins with opportunity.

Employers can help create more inclusive workplaces by considering applicants based on their skills and qualifications, providing reasonable accommodations when needed, offering effective training, and creating an environment where every employee is valued.

Sometimes, creating opportunity means making a small adjustment. Sometimes, it means providing additional support. And sometimes, it simply means giving someone the opportunity to demonstrate what they can do.

At CAI, we support individuals in identifying their interests, developing skills, exploring employment opportunities, and pursuing greater independence. We work to help each person build a life based on choice, opportunity, and personal goals.

A Stronger Community When Everyone Can Contribute

Our communities are stronger when people have opportunities to participate, contribute, and belong.

As we celebrate 250 years of our nation's history, we can also look toward the future by creating communities where people of all abilities have opportunities to share their talents.

This National Disability Employment Awareness Month, Community Alternatives, Inc. celebrates the value and talent of the people we support, the employers who create opportunities, and the communities that recognize the contributions of people with disabilities.

See Ability. Celebrate Talent. Create Opportunity.

Together, we can continue building workplaces and communities where everyone has the opportunity to contribute, belong, and thrive.
